about Dean Martin

Before Dean Martin began his career as an actor and recording star, he was a prizefighter, a steel mill worker, a gas station attendant and a blackjack dealer, a set of professions ideal for a performer who helped put Las Vegas on the map and earned the affection of women all over America, and eventually, worldwide. He worked the nightclub circuits for years before his ship finally came in, when he became half of the duo Martin & Lewis with comedian Jerry Lewis. They starred in numerous shows at the Copacabana Room at the 500 Club in Atlantic City, television appearances and feature films, beginning with My Friend Irma. Their act has been described most appropriately as "Martin sings, Lewis clowns." After the breakup of the comedy team, Dean went on to star in many more successful feature films, including Rio Bravo, the original Ocean's 11 and Ada. He encouraged his reputation as a laid-back, booze-imbibing crooner in his Las Vegas stage shows (most notably in the Copa Room at the Sands) in which he was frequently joined by buddies Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. He later lampooned himself in such films as Kiss Me, Stupid! and the original swingin' spy spoof The Silencers, the film which kicked off the Matt Helm series. By his final years he had starred in over 50 films and recorded over 100 albums and 500 songs. His songs are constantly being introduced to new generations in television commercials and movies such as Moonstruck (with "That's Amore") and Return to Me ("Return to Me (Ritorna Me)"), and each year there is a film festival (and Catholic mass) in his hometown of Steubenville, Ohio, celebrating the career and life of this charming, handsome and charismatic performer.
